
Dr. Michael “Mike” McQuary
Vice President
Dr. Michael “Mike” McQuary is a respected civic leader, former San Diego Unified School Board President, and long-time advocate for peace education and community engagement. As Vice President of SD-WISH, he helps guide the organization’s mission to promote global understanding, remembrance, and youth-driven humanitarian leadership.
Dr. McQuary played a pivotal role in the origin of the Trees for Peace program, championing the partnership between Green Legacy Hiroshima, the Japanese Friendship Garden, San Diego Unified School District, and SD-WISH. His vision helped bring Hiroshima survivor-tree descendant saplings to San Diego schools, turning living history into a foundation for peace curriculum and intercultural learning across the district.
With decades of experience as an educator, administrator, and public servant, Dr. McQuary has dedicated his career to empowering young people and strengthening community ties. During his tenure on the San Diego Unified Board of Education, he worked to expand global education initiatives, arts programs, and collaborative partnerships that connect students with the wider world.
In addition to his leadership at SD-WISH, Dr. McQuary continues to serve in various advisory and community roles that support international relationships, youth development, and peace-centered civic engagement. His work reflects a deep commitment to ensuring that future generations inherit a world informed by compassion, cultural understanding, and the lessons of history.
