On behalf of the City of Yokohama, I would like to express my sincere respect to the many people who will gather to pray for world peace at the “Friendship Bell,” a symbol of the enduring friendship between the sister cities of San Diego and Yokohama, as we hold once again the ceremony for the “International Day of Peace” this year.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. As we reach this important milestone, we must once again reflect deeply on the hardships endured by those who came before us and cherish the peace we are privileged to enjoy today. We must ensure that the tragedy of war is never forgotten, and remain committed to our efforts toward a world free of nuclear weapons and conflict. As a United Nations-recognized Peace Messenger City, Yokohama will continue to promote initiatives that pass on the importance of peace to younger generations. We will do our utmost to help build a peaceful world where everyone can have a fulfilling life.
Our sister city exchange with San Diego has been promoting international peace for more than 65 years and our heartfelt desire for peace is always united with the people of San Diego. Let us continue to work hand in hand to send a sincere and enduring message of peace to the world.
In closing, I would like to extend my heartfelt wishes for everlasting peace in the world and for the happiness of all those participating in this ceremony.
